Irish Hunger Memorial
Sponsored by the Battery Park City Authority, the Irish Hunger Memorial commemorates the Great Irish Famine and migration of 1845-50. A contemplative space where visitors can learn about the famine and its connections to world hunger today, the design was developed by artist Brian Tolle, landscape architect Gail Eileen Wittwer, and 1100 Architect.
The base is inscribed with over two miles of text drawn from varied sources that recount the history of the great Irish famine. Our modular design system offers the flexibility to include world hunger issues past and present. The typography, set in Rotis Semi Sans, was selected to underline the artist’s concept of bridging the past with the present.
